Natural resource potential
Zhytomyr region is rich in natural resources. Wide and various complex of useful minerals is concentrated in 512 deposits, 190 of which are being refined. Some of them are unique.
Thus regional deposits contain 85% of nationwide reserves of quartzites, apatites, labradorites and gabbro.
Zhytomyr region provides titanic concentrate to Ukraine and other countries.
The region’s mineral resources potential is represented with stone facing, marble, semiprecious stone, raw material for metallurgy, building and constructing industry, quicklime, brown coal and peat. Deposits of alkaline kaolin have been explored and there is a large enough quantity to produce s half million ton of spackling concentrates a year.
There are reserves of building sand, pyrophyllite shales, ceramic clays and range of other kinds of mineral building raw materials. Also there are rare-earth elements – vanadium, scandium, hafnium, and thorium, which are very popular on the world market.
Deposit of marble with a pattern which takes high polish is also very perspective.
Semi-precious stones — morion, beryl, topaz, quartz, berg crystal, amethyst, opal, chalcedony, agate are mined and processed on the territory of the region for further jewelry manufacturing.
The region is second in Ukraine for forest resources. Woodland covers almost 1/3 of the region territory. Dominating are the coniferous sorts of trees — 60%, hard-leaf (oak) and soft-leaf trees (birch, alder, aspen) — 20%. General stock of timber stands for over 200 million metric cubes.
Due to the high quality peat deposits there are great perspectives in the region to increase mining of fuel-energy minerals. 187 peat deposits have been excavated.
Zhytomyr region territory has a developed hydrographic system. The region’s territory is traversed with 221 rivers, their total length being 5366 km. All rivers belong to the Dnieper basin. The biggest water arteries are Teteriv, Hnylopiat, Guiva, Irsha, Irpin’ and Zdvyzh (upstream flows); tributary streams of Prypiat’ – Ubort’, Slovechna and Uzh with Yarukmif and Noryn; tributary stream of Goryn’ – Sluch.
Average density of the river system is 0,36 km/km2. Rivers of the region have mixed alimentation with dominating snowmelt-fed streams.
Underground water of Polissia is common. It occurs at depth accessible for plant roots, usually 5-10 meters. It’s a fresh, sodium bicarbonate type of water
53 % – agriculture lands.
By mechanical structure and physico-chemical characteristics soils within Zhytomyr region are very different. Sod podzol and marshy are zonal types of soils which often interchange each other and border with thinner grey forest soils.
In conditions of rather congestive dampness which is complicated with nearby occurrence of soil waters the emergence of peatbogs is intensive. Their thickness is approximately several meters.
In Polissia the majority of soils are sandy, sandy-loam, loamy, which are intensified by different soil materials. All these cause tessellation of soil and spread of sod podzol soils which take 60% of soil mantle.
